Basketball

Auckland Grammar School’s Premier Basketball Team has been ranked in the top ten at the National Secondary Schools Tournament for the last ten years consecutively. In 2024, the team won the Auckland Championship and finished fifth at the National Tournament.

NZ age group representative coaches Dave Mackay, Angela Perrott-Hunt and Lindsay Tait are responsible for coaching the Premier Team, as well as strengthening the basketball base by developing the skills of junior players. In 2024, the Junior Basketball Team won the Zone 1 Regional Tournament. The Under 17A Basketball Team won back-to-back Auckland Championships in 2023 and 2024.

Teams compete in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition administered by College Sport, at Premier, Open A, Under 17 and Junior levels.

Trials are held during weeks 10 and 11 of Term 1 for competitive teams. A preliminary trial is held earlier for the Premier Team. Students must register online to participate in trials. Notification of deadlines for registration, trial dates, practice times, games and results will be read out in assembly, posted on the Basketball noticeboard outside the Sports Centre, and posted on the Basketball page of GrammarNet.

Teams are announced at the end of Term 1. When teams have been selected, a fee will be charged to the parent portal to cover the cost of registration to College Sport and equipment. Uniforms (singlets and shorts) for players who are selected in competitive teams must be purchased from the School shop.

Competitive teams will have at least one after school or before school practice during Terms 2 and 3. Games are played after school / evenings on Wednesdays (Junior and Open A), Thursdays (Under 17) and Fridays (Premier).

There is an intra-school competition for social basketball players. There are no trials and no practices for the Social Basketball League. Students create their own teams and enter by registering online. The Social Basketball League is on Friday after school.
