Report: North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships

Over the weekend of Friday 7 – Sunday 9 March, the School’s Rowing squad travelled to Lake Karapiro to compete in the North Island Secondary Schools Championships.

Over three full days of racing, the squad performed well, with personal bests a feature of racing and the building strong momentum from Auckland Champs, towards the pinnacle of the season, national championships, known as Maadi Cup. Throughout the heats on Friday and Saturday, the squad reached a total of 11 A finals.

The Under 18 Coxed Eight crew consisting of Form 6 students E. R. Cooper, J. A. W. Thorp, B. J. Worrall and A. J. G. Worth and Form 7 students C. L. Stewart, F. M. Taylor and D. Yu, Captain of Rowing M. C. Goodall and coxswain D. J. W. Taylor placed a commendable sixth in their A final, rowing robustly and securing their first sub-six minute 2km.

The Under 16 Coxed Quad sculls consisting of Form 5 students B. M. Cameron, L. G. Cameron, M. E. Huxford-Derecourt, R. M. Mabey and coxswain B. Sun continued their form to dominate their heat, by winning it in a time of 6:57 over the 2km course. In the final they improved on their time to win, finishing three seconds ahead of Gisborne Boys’ High School in the A-final. Their time of 6:49 earned them Gold and the Mcleans Trophy (pictured above).

The Rowing Squad would like to thank all their supporters and now look to the final selections for the Maadi Cup, the final regatta of the season.
