Report: New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships

During Week 2 of Term 3, the School’s Premier Squash team competed in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships which was held in Wellington, with a total of 34 boys’ teams and over 300 students competing. The Premier team consisted of Form 3 student S. T. Rouse, Form 5 students C. A. Dunwoodie and A. N. Kounoudis, Form 6 students A. J. Huddart and P. C. Parker, Form 7 student and captain F. L. Goodson

The tournament consisted of five rounds of play and the Premier team began with 5-0 wins over Christ’s College, Green Bay High School and a tough 3-2 win over Whangarei Boys’ High School.  

The fourth round was against second seeds, Hamilton Boys’ High School. Despite being outmatched in Squash grading points, the Premier team played with determination and had a close lose of 8-10.

The final round, against Palmerston North Boys’ High School, was the playoff for third and fourth place. The Premier team produced some superlative Squash under considerable pressure to win 4-1 to secure the Bronze medals and third in New Zealand.

At the Prizegiving ceremony, S. T. Rouse was named as non-travelling reserve in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Junior Squash Team and F. L. Goodson was named as non-travelling reserve in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Senior Squash Team.
