Report: New Zealand Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships
On Sunday 13 August, 13 students represented the School at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Duathlon Championships, held at Ambury Park.
The Under 16 event consisted of a 3.5km run, a 15km cycle race, and another 2.5km run. The School had six individual competitors and one team in this event, which was led from start to finish by Form 5 student C. P. Wagener (pictured above), who claimed the Under 16 National title in a time of 41.09, 54 seconds clear of second place.
The Under 16 team of Form 5 students S. C. Randerson (run legs) and J. Kwon (cycle leg) put in an exceptionally strong showing to finish behind Wagener but in front of any other competitors to take the Under 16 Teams title.
The Senior Under 19 race consisted of a 5km run, a 20km cycle, and a2.5km run. In his final event for Grammar, Captain of Multisport Q. R. Gardiner-Hall raced superbly to finish in a time of 1:04.15, finishing in fourth place in a strong field behind a number of New Zealand representative athletes.
The Under 19 team of Form 6 students R. W. Fitzpatrick (run legs) and J. A. J. Barclay (cycle leg) worked solidly together to finish first in a time of 58.05 to claim the Under 19 Teams title.
All five students crossed stage to receive their national medals and the School’s congratulations. Special thanks to Head of Sport B. Richardson for his support and guidance of the team.
