Report: Auckland Rowing Club Championships
On Sunday 4 February, the entire Rowing Team competed at the Auckland Club Championships, held at Lake Karapiro for the first time. This meant that races were a full 2km long instead of 900m like it used to be when the Championships were held at Lake Pupuke. The entire team appreciated the change to a correct race course.
The team performed superbly with nine crews making the podium, including:
- The Novice Under 18 Eight crew winning Gold over King’s College and Westlake Boys’ High School
- The Under 18 eight who won Bronze behind Mount Albert Grammar School and St Peter’s College. The crew had undergone a few changes for this race and was composed of Form 6 students M. C. Goodall and L. W. Toner, and Form 7 students H. D. S. Barrell, F. P. Houghton, H. D. Mackenzie, A. J. Merrilees, A. P. G. Redshaw, W. C. Riley and coxswain S. W. L. Fisher. They had a good start and stayed close to their opponents to finish well in third place.
The team now enters an intense month-long training programme to prepare for the North Island Secondary Schools Championships at Lake Karapiro at the end of February.
