Auckland Secondary Schools Squash Team Championships
On Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 June, the Premier Squash team competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Team Championships, a greater Auckland regional competition, at the North Shore Squash Club.
The Premier team was in the top boys division. On day one of the competition, the team was afforded a bye in the first round, then went on to play Howick College and Takapuna Grammar School, winning both 5-0 and 4-1 respectively.
On Wednesday morning the team played Orewa College in the semi-final and won 5-0, to put the team into the final against Westlake Boys High School.
The final was an intense and competitive affair; the Squash team from Westlake always rise to the challenge when playing Grammar and the matches reflected this with several going down to the wire, coming down to the last few points. Eventually, the Premier Squash team prevailed to win 5-0 and received the Peter Williams Shield as National Champions for 2022.
It has been some time since the School has held the trophy for this competition, and it was with considerable satisfaction that the team has been able to wrest it back. Over the course of the two days, they dropped just one individual match in 20. While there is still plenty of hard training to come, they can take great confidence as a team in this result.
Congratulations to the team and to captain A. S. Fatialofa, who crossed stage on Thursday 23 June to receive the shield and the School’s applause. A special thanks to manager Mr Simon Lassche for his ongoing support and guidance.
