Auckland Secondary Schools Snowboarding Championships
On Thursday 16 June, the Auckland Secondary Schools Snowboarding Championships were held at Snowplanet. 75 students from schools across the region took part in three separate events: the Slopestyle, Grand Slalom and Dual Race.
In the Slopestyle event, Form 3 student J. A. Gowing and Form 4 student B. J. Li progressed through to the final round, with Li winning the junior title and Gowing finishing in fourth place.
In the Grand Slalom, competitors each have a timed run on two different courses. The School had two of the three top places with Li earning Silver and Gowing gaining bronze. Form 5 student F. K. Mangan and Form 6 student H. J. Waldegrave finished in 10th and 16th respectively, picking up vital points for the overall team competition.
The day finished with the Dual Race, where competitors race against each other in a knockout slalom run with 50% of the field eliminated each round. Gowing progressed through to the finals and finished as the fastest junior racer.
Overall, the team finished in second place on 221 points, just 15 points behind first place. Their second place positions the team well for the North Island Secondary Schools Championships taking place at Turoa Ski Field in September.
Congratulations to the whole team and to Master in Charge Mr Mark Crook for his continued guidance and support.
