Pipe Band
Bagpipes
Students interested in learning to play the bagpipes begin their training on the practice chanter, a smaller, quieter instrument that helps them develop essential finger techniques and breath control.
Once they demonstrate readiness and mastery of the chanter, students’ progress to the full bagpipes, where they apply their skills to produce the instrument’s distinctive, resonant sound. While prior musical experience can be helpful, it is not required – dedicated beginners are welcome. Instrument hire is available through the Music Department, subject to availability.
Pipe Band Drumming
Our highly regarded Pipe Band warmly welcomes new drummers interested in joining the distinguished Corps of Drums section. Drum lessons are available for snare, tenor, and bass drums, focusing on the specialised techniques unique to pipe band performance. Lessons are designed to build essential drumming fundamentals such as rhythm, timing, and coordination, while also developing the ability to perform in synchrony with the entire Pipe Band.
Students in the Pipe Band Drumming programme learn not only to play individually but also to engage as part of a cohesive unit, contributing to the powerful sound and dynamic visual presentation that defines a high-calibre pipe band performance.
Throughout the year, drummers have multiple opportunities to perform at school events, and community engagements, including Auckland University graduation, and competitive pipe band gatherings, allowing them to experience the excitement and camaraderie of participating in this long-standing school tradition.
