Report: Auckland Basketball Finals
The Premier Basketball team played Rosmini College in the final of the Auckland Premier Competition on Friday 23 August.
The team played with intensity from the opening whistle, shooting with confidence, including captain R. S. Hunt who scored the very first three-point attempt. Rosmini College found it difficult to connect on the first few possessions and an 11-point lead capped off a low-scoring first quarter (22-11).
During the second quarter, it was clear that the Premier team’s aggressiveness on attack were effective. Defensively, the team made scoring difficult for Rosmini, and stretched the lead to 17 points by halftime.
Early foul trouble for team in the third quarter gave Rosmini College more free-throw opportunities. However, the defensive pressure and a balanced scoring effort resulted in a 23-point lead at the end of the quarter. The team applied the pressure throughout the final quarter to win the game 91-56 and claim the Auckland Title. Top scorers for the Premier Basketball team were Form 6 student J. A. Kiss (with 21 points) and captain R. S. Hunt (with 17 points).
Of interest, the last time the Premier team won the competition was in 2011, and it is the 13th time Auckland Grammar School teams have won the title since its inception 50 years ago. The School has won the competition the most times behind Westlake Boys’ High School (eight times), Kelston Boys’ High School (six times), Mt Albert Grammar School (six times) and Rosmini College (five times).
Thanks to Mr Tait, Mr Mackay, Mr Ben and Mrs Butler for their commitment to the team, and to all the supporters who were at the final on Friday night. They will now prepare for regionals and nationals during Winter Tournament Week.
